Filing an Unemployment Claim/Extension & Registration for Work
To collect Unemployment Benefits, you must File a Claim and Register for Work
To File a New Unemployment Claim or Reopen an Existing Claim: There are two ways to file or reopen an unemployment claim:

How to Register for Work to Receive Unemployment Benefits: To allow sufficient time for unemployment registration, all individuals should arrive no later than 3:30 p.m. Once you have filed an unemployment claim or an extension, you must report in person to a Michigan Works Agency (MWA) to Register for Work. Registering for work means a MWA verifies for the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) that you have an active resume in the Michigan Talent Bank (MTB). If you have already posted your resume in the Michigan Talent Bank, you still need to report in person to complete your registration.
Unemployment claimants will need to provide the following to Register for Work:
To Post a Resume on the Michigan Talent Bank: 1. Go to www.michworks.org 2. Click on the CREATE A RESUME button in the box Job Seekers - Looking for a Job?, or click on the dropdown menu: Job Seekers and when a menu appears, click on the Sign up / Create resume option from this menu. 3. Fill in the requested information for the Sign up page. All fields marked with a red dot and at least one method of contact are required. Click on Next. 4. Create your User ID and PIN. (Be sure to keep a record of this information.) Click on Submit. 5. Click on Enter Chronological Resume or Enter Functional Resume. 6. Add your resume information to the Resume Builder and Save it periodically. A Save icon is located at the top right-hand portion of the webpage. Saving your resume is very important since the system will time out in an hour if the resume is not saved. 7. Click on Submit Resume at the bottom of the page.
Updating Your Michigan Talent Bank Resume: You must go into your resume from any computer with the Internet at least every 30 days to update your resume for employer activity and it will also let the Unemployment office know you are actively looking for work. 1. Go to www.michworks.org 2. Move the cursor on the heading Job Seekers and when a menu appears, click on the Login / Update resume option from this menu. 3. Enter your User ID and PIN. Click on Submit. 4. Click on Update to change information and update your resume simultaneously. If you do not need to change information, simply click on the Quick Update box on the left hand side of the screen. 5. Click on Search for Jobs (in upper right hand corner) to find jobs that match your resume. 6. Click on Quit to exit (in upper right hand comer).
Contacting the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA): Telephone Inquiries: If you have any questions, concerns, or issues in regards to your unemployment claim, you need to contact the UIA at 1-866-500-0017. The phone number is available to speak with a representative weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Problem Resolution Offices: If you can not resolve your issues over the phone, you can go to one of the following Problem Resolution Offices on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: 1.) 33523 Eight Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan, 48152 (in the Kroger shopping center) 2.) Unemployment Payments and Other Services Available Online: Once you register for Online Services, you are able to log on and view your benefit year beginning and end dates, weekly benefit amounts (gross), current payment methods, Regular and Extended weeks paid and weeks remaining. It also has a payment processor log with dates and details. You can certify with Marvin Online through this service.
Clients can sign up for online services with UIA to access your benefit information by registering at: www.michigan.gov/uia and click on Online Services for Unemployed Workers. It takes a few days for the UIA to send your password to access the information.
